A used Balance 526 is asking roughly $1.25 million to $2.3 million as of 2026, with early hulls at the bottom and late Mk II boats at the top. The boat is South African: the larger Balance models came out of the St Francis Bay yard on the Eastern Cape, and the run closed with hull 36 when Balance replaced it with the 540. Every 526 you can buy today is therefore a brokerage boat, and most of the ones we tracked this year were lying in the US or the Mediterranean rather than in Cape Town.
Naval architect Anton du Toit drew it with Balance founder Phillip Berman as a fast blue-water cat that a couple can handle without paid crew. Daggerboards, a foam and epoxy hull with carbon in the load paths, and the VersaHelm steering position are why it trades well above production charter cats of similar length.
We find 526s wherever they are listed, put a surveyor aboard and plan the delivery. If you would rather order new from the same factory, the conversation moves to the 540.
Balance 526 price in 2026
Asking prices we saw in September 2026, all in US dollars and all subject to negotiation:
- A 2016 boat in Spain listed at about $1,249,950.
- A 2021 boat in Florida at $1,699,000, duty paid.
- A 2024 Mk II in Montenegro at $2,100,000.
- A 2025 Mk II with Integrel E-Drive hybrid propulsion in Boston at $2,200,000.
- A 2024 ex-factory demo boat in the US Virgin Islands, last asked at $2,325,000 before it sold.
For context on the new price: when SAIL tested the boat in 2016 it was quoted at $1,299,000 ex factory. Later quotes put a base boat at about $1.8 million FOB South Africa and a fully cruise-equipped one near $2.2 million. That $400,000 gap between base and equipped is worth remembering when you compare a bare used listing with a loaded one.
Read the tax line before the price: duty paid in the US, VAT paid in the EU, or neither, moves the real cost more than haggling will. For a South African buyer bringing a 526 home, the rules we work with put SADC-origin boats on the duty-free side, but VAT at the current SARS rate is still due on import. Have SARS or a clearing agent confirm the HS 8903 classification first.
VersaHelm, daggerboards and the Mk II
The VersaHelm is the feature owners mention first. The helm seat and wheel pivot between a raised outboard position, where you see the sails and the sail controls are grouped, and a sheltered position inside the cockpit for night watches and bad weather. On a shorthanded ocean passage that choice matters more than an extra cabin.
The daggerboards are buoyant and have to be winched down. With them raised the boat draws just 1.12m, which opens shallow anchorages; lowered, it points and tracks like a performance boat. A keel version exists for owners who never want to touch a board.
Late boats carry Mk II changes: a redesigned carbon roof structure that removed the saloon posts for clear sightlines, better aft cockpit seating and foiled carbon daggerboards. Keep an eye on weight. The gap between 12,500kg base and 15,625kg maximum is your whole payload, and a cruising couple fills it faster than they expect. A heavy 526 gives back the speed you paid for, and on a boat this age the survey moves the price more than the Mk I or Mk II badge does.
Most 526s are listed abroad. Send us your budget and we will map every hull currently available.

Our survey brief for this model goes beyond a standard catamaran checklist:
- Daggerboards, trunks and bearings for grounding or impact damage, plus the winches and lines that lower the boards.
- Moisture and delamination readings across the Corecell and epoxy sandwich, and the quality of any past repairs.
- VersaHelm pivot, locking gear and steering linkage for play and wear.
- Hours and service records on both Yanmar engines separately, and sail-drive seal dates.
- Age of the standing rigging and of the large mainsail, screecher and asymmetric spinnaker.
- Hybrid system and battery health on the few boats fitted with electric drive.
- Hull number, build year and Mk I or Mk II status against the builder's paperwork.
- Proof of duty or VAT status in the country where the boat now lies.
Buying a 526 from South Africa
Few 526s are for sale inside South Africa at any one time, so most of our searches start abroad. We shortlist hulls, compare the equipment against price, and then plan either a delivery passage or deck cargo, whichever suits the route and the season.
If the 526 is at the top of your budget, compare it with the Leopard 50, a Cape Town volume cruiser with up to six cabins that costs less on the used market. Buyers who want a semi-custom South African cat at lower money should look at the Knysna 500 SE. Our overview of catamarans for sale in South Africa sets all of the local builders side by side, with price guides.
We send photo sets, inventories and survey reports for any 526 we put forward, on WhatsApp and on request.
Your questions, answered
How much does a Balance 526 cost?
As of 2026, used Balance 526 catamarans ask roughly $1.25 million for a 2016 hull and $2.2 million to $2.3 million for a 2024 or 2025 Mk II. New boats were last quoted around $1.8 million FOB South Africa, and about $2.2 million equipped for cruising. Check whether duty or VAT has been paid, since that changes the real cost.
Is the Balance 526 still in production?
No. Balance built 36 hulls of the 526 and replaced it with the larger-volume Balance 540, announced in 2025. Every 526 on the market now is a brokerage boat, so the job is finding the right hull, not a build slot.
Where is the Balance 526 built?
In South Africa. The larger Balance models, including the 526, were built at the St Francis Bay yard on the Eastern Cape coast, with smaller models built in Cape Town. The design is by Anton du Toit working with Balance founder Phillip Berman.
What is the VersaHelm on a Balance 526?
It is a steering station that pivots between two positions. The raised position gives a clear view of the sails and puts the sail controls at hand, and the lower position moves the helmsman into the sheltered cockpit for night watches and heavy weather.
